Florida Wind Uplift Ratings, Explained

The Number Is About the Assembly, Not the Shingle
Every roofing product carries a wind rating, and homeowners reasonably read it as a promise: 130 mph on the wrapper means the roof survives 130 mph winds.
It does not work that way. A wind rating is the result of a laboratory test of a specific assembly, installed a specific way, on a specific deck. Change the fastener pattern, the underlayment or the deck condition and you no longer have the tested assembly — you have something that resembles it.
That distinction matters more in Central Florida than almost anywhere else.
What Uplift Actually Is
Wind does not push a roof off a house. It pulls.
As air moves across a roof plane it accelerates, and accelerating air drops in pressure. The result is lower pressure above the roof than inside the attic beneath it, and the difference tries to lift the assembly upward. That is uplift.
Two consequences follow.
Pressure is not uniform. Uplift concentrates at edges, corners and ridges — which is exactly why building codes require heavier fastening in those zones, and why storm damage so often starts at a rake edge or a corner rather than in the middle of a slope.
Interior pressure matters. A broken window on the windward side pressurises the house and increases the differential across the roof. Roof failures and window failures are related events, not independent ones.
The Ratings You Will See
ASTM D3161
A wind-resistance test for asphalt shingles, run at set speeds. Class F is the highest commonly cited, corresponding to 110 mph under test conditions.
ASTM D7158
A more recent standard that models uplift more realistically, using building height and exposure category. Class H is the top tier, associated with 150 mph.
Florida Product Approval and Miami-Dade NOA
Florida operates its own approval system, and Miami-Dade's Notice of Acceptance is the more demanding of the two. A product carrying a Miami-Dade NOA has been through testing beyond the general national standards. Products approved there are widely used elsewhere in the state for that reason.
Why the Rated Number Is Not the Real-World Number
Three reasons, in order of how often they matter.
Fastener placement. This is the dominant variable. A shingle nailed above the nailing strip is held by the shingle above it rather than by the deck. It will pass a visual inspection and fail in wind. It is the single most common installation defect and it is invisible once the next course is laid.
Deck condition. A fastener is only as good as what it goes into. Old, delaminated or moisture-damaged sheathing does not hold a nail at rated withdrawal strength, regardless of the shingle.
Sealing. Asphalt shingles rely on a heat-activated sealant strip to bond each course to the one below. Installed in cool weather, or over a dirty surface, those strips may never fully bond — and an unsealed shingle has a fraction of its rated resistance.
What Governs Your Roof
The Florida Building Code sets wind design requirements by location, using design wind speed maps, exposure category and building characteristics. Inland Central Florida requirements differ from coastal Brevard County, which is why a specification appropriate in one is not automatically appropriate in the other.
Your permit and inspection process exists to verify the assembly matches what the code requires for your address. It is worth reading what your estimate specifies rather than assuming.
Questions Worth Asking
If you are comparing roofing estimates, these separate a rated assembly from a rated product:
- Which standard, and which class? D3161 Class F and D7158 Class H are not the same claim.
- How many fasteners per shingle, and where? Enhanced patterns exist for high-wind zones and are commonly specified in Florida.
- What happens at the perimeter? Edge and corner zones need more fastening than the field.
- Is the drip edge specified and fastened to code? The roof edge is where uplift begins.
- Is deteriorated decking included? Nobody knows the deck condition until the old roof is off.
- What underlayment, and is a secondary water barrier included? This is what stands between your house and the weather once surface material is gone.
The Practical Summary
A high wind rating is necessary and not sufficient. The assembly, the fastening and the deck determine whether that number means anything on your house.
